Not one of their classics, but a good one in their later career - Admittedly, INSIDE MY HEAD and BACK FROM SAMOA are the classics, but STP Not LSD is pretty darn good, only falling short in comparison to their own material. STP Not LSD is much less raw, and has the qualities of a punk band who used to record everything in a single take and are trying out the concept of multi-tracking for the first time ever. Everything has separation, and then they attempt to mix it into rockin songs. YESTERDAY STARTED TODAY was the beginning of the later phase of their career, and is the transition between the old and new Samoans. Whereas YESTERDAY STARTED TODAY has one singular sound quality front-to-back, STP Not LSD is all over the place. This is where guitars have distortion from a pedal (not from frying their amps), some songs are presented in their more pure folk/demo style, while others incorporate elements of psychedelia. The general tone resembles a 60 s garage band writing what they consider Pop songs. There s love songs on here for crying out loud! Previous to YESTERDAY STARTED TODAY, if the Angry Samoans wrote a song about girls it was plain rude and crude. STP Not LSD is typified as rude punkers growing up and continuing to flex songwriting muscles to turn out something besides screaming anthems. Previously close to the Germs in sound, now they re closer to Heartbreakers, Dead Milkmen and former band member Jeff Dahl s solo albums that flirt with topics of a more serious nature than My Old Man s a Fatso. I d rate YESTERDAY STARTED TODAY as 5 stars to STP Not LSD s 4 stars. It sucks that it took them re-releasing everything as THE UNBOXED SET to get some cred, but hallelujah I m glad they did!
